Catalogued as number 1158, this portrait comes from Harris & Ewing, a commercial photography studio that Richard Lee Ewing and George W. Harris founded in Washington, D.C., in 1905. The record dates it to 1939 or 1940, a period when the studio photographed a broad cross-section of the capital, from government officials to ordinary residents. Its large glass-plate negatives were later held by the Library of Congress, where they serve as a useful record of the city's people and public life in the decades before World War II.
