Turned to the left, this photograph records a marble bust of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish-Lithuanian officer who served as a volunteer engineer in the American Revolution and helped fortify West Point. The caption card names Henryk D. Saunders as the sculptor and places the work in the U.S. Capitol. The card gives no date for the photograph, and the 1857 date in the record is unverified. Kościuszko is remembered in the United States for that wartime service, and in Poland for leading the 1794 uprising, which made him a national hero there. His likeness was often chosen to honor shared ideals of liberty.
