A general view looking northeast across Ellis Island, the third in a numbered set of black-and-white images documenting the island's buildings and grounds in 1978. Ellis Island opened as a federal immigration station in 1892, and after a fire in 1897 destroyed its original wooden structures, the Beaux-Arts main building that replaced them became the processing center for millions of arrivals until the station closed in 1954. A view from this angle shows how the island's buildings and open ground fit together, which helps anyone tracing its layout over time.
