Labeled simply as a general view of a statue, this picture most likely shows the Statue of Liberty, the copper figure on Liberty Island in sight of Ellis Island. France gave the statue to the United States, and it was dedicated in 1886. Its sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, meant it to greet people arriving by sea, and Gustave Eiffel engineered its internal framework. A broad survey shot like this one shows the full figure and its harbor setting, which helps explain why it became a welcoming symbol for the millions who passed through Ellis Island after it opened in 1892.
