The Lusitania was one of the most celebrated ocean liners of its era. The Cunard steamship entered service in 1907 and soon won the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows the ship in New York, where her transatlantic route from Liverpool ended. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for travel and promotional views, made many photographs of American cities and transportation, and this plate preserves a detailed look at the liner before she was sunk by a German U-boat off Ireland in 1915.
