This stereograph is a classroom lesson rather than a portrait of a place. Its title, "Eco. Geo. Unit #4: cultivating cotton," marks it as part of an economic geography series on how cotton was grown. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, produced stereo cards like this for schools, and this one dates to about 1947. Cultivating cotton, which meant tilling and hoeing between rows, was long done with mules and horses pulling implements, and images like this record a method that was giving way to tractors in the years after the war.
