A Canadian horse-drawn artillery unit in northern Russia is the subject here, a detail that sets this picture apart from the many other images of horses on this board. The photograph is dated only with a question mark, to around 1919, when Allied forces, including Canadian troops, were still operating in the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions after the First World War. In that campaign, horses remained essential for moving guns and supplies over muddy tracks and snow-covered roads where motor vehicles often could not go. The image is a useful record of how much the war's logistics still depended on animal power.
