Few images from the Crimean War show the daily work of mounted artillery as plainly as this encampment of the Royal Horse Artillery. Roger Fenton made it in 1855, when he was in the Crimea photographing the British army for the first time on a large scale. Horse artillery was built for speed: its guns were pulled by teams that could keep pace with cavalry, so the horses and their harness were as central to the unit as the cannon. The salted paper process Fenton used gave these prints a soft, warm tone, and the surviving examples are among the earliest photographs of an army in the field.
