Roger Fenton's 1855 salted paper print shows a field train of horse artillery in the Crimea, a detail that sets it apart from the many horse portraits on this board. Fenton arrived in the Crimean peninsula in 1855 to make photographs for the British public, and his work is among the first sustained photographic coverage of a war. Horse artillery units moved quickly with their guns and supply wagons, so a field train like this one was essential to keeping the batteries supplied in camp and on campaign. The print's title, transcribed from the back, names the scene directly, and its salted paper process gives it the soft, warm tones typical of photographs from the 1850s.
