Roger Fenton made this salted paper print in 1855 during the Crimean War, and it shows a camp of the Royal Horse Artillery with bell tents and men gathered among their horses on the Crimean plateau. The record names John James Brandling as one of the officers connected to the regiment, which gives the scene a specific human anchor. Fenton, a photographer sent out to document the war for a British audience, worked with large glass plates and then printed on paper coated in salt and silver, a process that gave his images their soft, warm tone. Horse artillery units moved quickly and were prized for keeping pace with the infantry, so their camps were a common sight in his work.
