A hand-colored lithograph titled *Royal Horse Artillery* shows mounted British gunners, a unit whose defining feature was speed. Formed in 1793, the Royal Horse Artillery kept its field guns and their crews moving at the pace of cavalry, so the horses were as essential as the cannon. The card dates the print only to about the mid-19th century, a period when British artillery uniforms and the teams that pulled the guns were changing. Hand coloring was a common way to add detail to such prints, and the painted tunics and harness show how the regiment wanted to be seen.
