Made near Balaklava on the Crimean peninsula, this view shows a encampment of the Royal Horse Artillery, mounted gunners whose batteries were designed to move as quickly as cavalry. Roger Fenton took it in 1855, while he was in the Crimea documenting the British army during the Crimean War for audiences at home. As a salted paper print, it has the soft, warm tones typical of that process, and the horses and tents still give a clear sense of how the army organized its daily life in the field.
