Dated between 1862 and 1864, this drawing shows horse-drawn artillery, the fast field guns that were central to many Civil War battles. In horse artillery, each gun and its caisson were pulled by teams of horses, so the crews could keep pace with cavalry and reach a fight quickly. Both Union and Confederate armies fielded these batteries, and their ability to reposition rapidly could decide the outcome of an engagement. The drawing is part of a wartime group that J.P. Morgan gave to the Library of Congress in 1919.
