An oval daguerreotype of H. H. Fage, shown head and shoulders and turned slightly to the left, survives in its original red velvet case with a push-button clasp. An 1862 note kept with it says the portrait was carried by someone identified only as A.C.F., which suggests it was treasured as a personal keepsake. By then the daguerreotype was being overtaken by paper prints, but cased portraits like this one remained popular for carrying during the Civil War years. The case is printed with the name Anson and a Broadway address in New York, a clue to the business that sold or processed it.
