Embossed in the velvet of its case with the name of Brady's Gallery at 205 and 359 Broadway in New York, this half-plate daguerreotype shows the abolitionist orator Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), head and shoulders, turned to the left. Phillips, a Boston lawyer who became one of the movement's most forceful speakers, was a prominent antislavery voice in the 1850s, and portraits of him were made for admirers and fellow reformers. Mathew Brady's Broadway rooms were among the best-known portrait studios of the period, and the oval case, framed by flowers and scrolls, shows the ornate taste of the time.
