Laundry strung between the back walls of tenement houses gives this view its subject, a Monday washing, the weekly chore that filled many New York yards with drying sheets and shirts. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s and used in the United States under license by the Detroit Photographic Company, which compiled such prints into albums as an office catalog. Made around 1900, it records the crowded rear of city housing, where many families had no home laundry and relied on lines stretched across narrow courtyards. The saturated colors make the drying linen stand out against the brick.
