This view of the Bowery, the lower Manhattan street whose name was long linked with theaters, cheap lodgings, and saloons, is distinguished by the elevated railway tracks running overhead, which carried passengers above the crowded commercial blocks below. The image is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that used lithographic stones to reproduce photographs in color, and the Detroit Publishing Company adopted it widely in the United States around 1900. The print comes from an album the company assembled as a catalog for its own office, so it reflects the kind of city scene the firm sold to buyers across the country.
