This 1917 poster lithograph shows a town crier in colonial dress calling out at Independence Hall, which places a World War I appeal in the city where the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The message comes from the Four Minute Men, volunteers organized by the federal Committee on Public Information to give short patriotic talks on the war in movie houses, churches and other public gatherings. The poster links that wartime speaking effort to the town criers who once spread news through colonial streets. Its artist, H. Devit Welsh, uses the old figure to suggest that the work of informing the public was as important in 1917 as it had been in 1776.
