A meteorograph, an instrument built to show how fast the wind is blowing, is the focus of this picture, which was made for the Weather Bureau. Instruments of this kind typically recorded wind and other readings on a moving drum, giving forecasters a continuous log rather than a single reading. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington and its government agencies in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative, dated to about 1924, shows streaks and other blemishes from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, a reminder of how fragile these plates are.
