A man identified as B.C. Kadel, chief of the instrument division of the Weather Bureau, tests a household thermometer, a reminder that the bureau's staff checked everyday instruments as well as scientific gear. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a Washington, D.C., commercial studio that documented government agencies and public life in the early twentieth century. It survives as a glass negative dating to about 1924, and the streaks and blemishes that show up in it are typical of coatings that have deteriorated over time.
