Unlike many First World War recruiting posters, this one has no illustration, only a poem under the blunt title "What have you done for Ireland?" Printed in Dublin by Alex. Thom & Co. in 1915, it asks Irish men to answer that question by enlisting. The year fell in a period of active recruiting in Ireland, when appeals appealed to local loyalty and national pride as well as to the wider British war effort. Thom's was one of the largest printing firms in the city, so the poster also reflects the commercial printing trade of wartime Dublin.
