Its entire message rests on two printed questions asking whether a man's reasons for staying out of the Army are genuine or merely excuses, and whether he will do his duty only when the law compels him. Issued in 1916 by the Central Council for the Organisation of Recruiting in Ireland and printed by Alex. Thom & Co. in Dublin, it appeared in the months after the Easter Rising, when recruiting in Ireland was difficult. Rather than show soldiers or battlefields, it appeals to conscience and tries to shame men into enlisting voluntarily, since conscription was never applied in Ireland during the war.
