The detail that sets this photograph apart is the setting: the three Allied leaders stand together on the portico of the Soviet Embassy in Tehran, where the conference was held from November 28 to December 1, 1943. Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill met there to coordinate strategy against Germany and to discuss plans for the postwar settlement, including the opening of a second front in Western Europe. The photograph was taken by the U.S. Army Signal Corps, whose wartime images of Allied diplomacy were widely circulated, and it remains one of the few pictures bringing the three men together in a single frame.
