Four horses are harnessed side by side in "Our Trotters," the kind of team that pulled a light racing carriage on the track, where speed and steady gait were prized as much as strength. Trotting races were a popular sport in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and owners often showed off their best horses in matched teams like this one. The image preserves the rigging, the lean of the carriage, and the focused posture of the animals, which together record a sport that drew large crowds before the automobile began to replace the horse on American roads and tracks.
