What sets this picture apart is the printed phrase "Havana Filled," which places a tobacco advertisement beside a scene of jockeys riding hard around the track. Advertisers of the late 1800s and early 1900s often borrowed the excitement of horse racing to sell cigars, since the sport drew large crowds and a largely male audience with money to spend. "Havana filled" referred to cigars made with Havana tobacco, a mark of quality that many American makers promoted. The crouched riders and tightly bunched horses are meant to lend the brand energy and prestige.
