Two British soldiers tending to horses is the subject of this glass negative, a scene of routine military care that is easy to overlook beside more dramatic wartime pictures. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, so the exact setting and year remain unconfirmed. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain, sold news photographs mainly in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives now form a large part of the Library of Congress collection. Feeding and grooming were daily duties for cavalry and transport units, when horses still carried much of the army's load, and pictures like this one show that everyday work.
