Belgium, the setting named in this title, saw some of the heaviest fighting of the First World War, and this scene of horses being buried after a battle likely belongs to that conflict, though the record gives no date. Armies on both sides relied on enormous numbers of horses to haul supplies, pull artillery, and carry riders, so when animals died in the fighting, their bodies had to be removed quickly to prevent disease and clear roads and fields. The negative was made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs, and its title comes from caption cards that have not been independently verified.
