Few pictures in the Bain collection show the aftermath of battle as plainly as this one, which records the burial of horses on the battlefield at Haelen. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that distributed images from European fronts during the First World War, and the record gives no date, so the subject is the best clue to when it was made. Horses died in great numbers in that war, killed in charges, by shellfire, and from exhaustion, and burying them was a hurried, unglamorous task left to troops behind the lines. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact location should be treated with some caution.
