Fire horses competing for prizes are the subject here, with the date of May 30, 1914 taken from the caption data on the glass negative. By that year, motorized fire apparatus was spreading through American cities, and horses that had pulled engines and wagons for decades were being retired or reassigned, so a competition like this one captures a working life that was ending. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, made the negative, and the glass plate format of the period preserves fine detail in the harness and the animals' coats.
