Horse teams once pulled fire engines and hose wagons through American city streets, and the Bain News Service recorded that working life on glass negatives. The record gives only the title "Fire engine horses," taken from unverified caption data, so the station, city, and date are unknown. Bain's agency was based in New York and worked in the early twentieth century, when motorized apparatus was steadily replacing horses. Pictures like this one preserve a brief moment when the animals were still central to fighting fires.
