This color lithograph carries the blunt appeal "50000 men wanted," a target that shows how openly New South Wales measured its wartime needs in headcounts. Posters like it were part of the voluntary recruiting campaign that filled the Australian Imperial Force during 1915, when the country depended on enlistment rather than conscription. The approach changed after two conscription referendums failed, in 1916 and 1917. The poster's history is also notable: a former owner was the Rehse Archive for Contemporary History and Publicistics in Germany, a reminder that recruiting images circulated among collectors of wartime propaganda far from where they were printed.
