Few recruiting posters from 1917 name a trade as plainly as this one, which asks for machinists and firemen, the men who tended a ship's boilers and engines. The United States had entered the First World War that April, and the Coast Guard, then part of the Treasury Department, was expanding its ranks for wartime duties along the coasts. Large color lithographs like this were typically hung in post offices and public places to reach workers with mechanical skills, not just seafaring experience.
