A silkscreen poster from 1936 that announces a Los Angeles stage production with the blunt line "Two a day is leaving soon," a hurry-up phrase that doubles as a nod to the vaudeville habit of two performances daily. It was made under the Federal theater Project, one arm of the Works Progress Administration's federal arts program, which put unemployed actors, designers, and playwrights to work during the Depression and staged plays for ticket prices most working people could afford. The Work Projects Administration poster collection that holds it is among the best records of how those theaters advertised, since their posters often mixed bold lettering with flat, color-blocked graphics. Look closely at the layered inks, which show how silkscreen was adapted for cheap, durable public notices.
