The Rotunda and the long brick colonnades of the University of Virginia's Lawn are among the most recognizable compositions Thomas Jefferson left behind, and this color view captures the ensemble in the way visitors encounter it today. Jefferson designed the university, which opened in 1825, as an "academical village" of pavilions and student rooms arranged around a grassy Lawn, with the domed Rotunda closing the north end as its library. The campus was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and the Lawn remains in active use, so the scene pictured here is both a historic design and a working academic space. Look for the symmetry of the pavilions and the way the Rotunda anchors the whole composition.
