Here a log cabin is linked to a crossing used by Gen. Oliver Otis Howard's wagon train in Yellowstone. Howard led U.S. Army forces in 1877 in pursuit of the Nez Perce, and his column moved through the park's rough backcountry, where wagons had to cross rivers and push through timber on little more than a track. The photograph dates to about 1913, several decades later, when Yellowstone had been a national park for some years and its early buildings and routes were drawing interest as remnants of the frontier past. The contrast between the handmade log walls and the wild country around them is worth a closer look.
