A string of pack animals on a trail near Raven Creek shows how visitors and supplies moved through Yellowstone before the park's roads could carry much traffic. The photograph is credited to J.E. Haynes of St. Paul, Minnesota, the photographer who documented the park for decades and whose Yellowstone studio sold views to tourists. Pack trains like this one were a common way to reach backcountry camps and remote sites, and images of them helped shape the public's picture of the park as a wilderness that could still be explored on horseback.
