Boston Harbor crowded with ships and British troops marks this hand-colored engraving, signed by the engraver Beeler, as a scene of retreat. The British army under William Howe left the town in March 1776, after American artillery, brought from Ticonderoga by Henry Knox, appeared on Dorchester Heights and threatened the fleet. Howe sailed for Halifax with his soldiers and many Loyalist residents, and Washington's troops entered the town on March 17. The print's date is uncertain, likely from the later nineteenth century, when such patriotic scenes of the Revolution were popular.
