Few episodes of the Revolution ended as abruptly as the British withdrawal from Boston, which took place on March 17, 1776, after American artillery on Dorchester Heights threatened the British fleet and garrison. This hand-colored engraving, credited to Beeler as engraver, shows the departure from the town, and the color adds detail to the harbor and the ships. The evacuation came after a siege of nearly a year and carried British troops and many Loyalists to Halifax, ending British control of the city.
