The engraving shows the British army's departure from Boston in March 1776, when the ships in its harbor marked the end of the long siege. After Continental forces hauled artillery from Ticonderoga and fortified Dorchester Heights overlooking the harbor, General William Howe chose to withdraw his troops and many Loyalist residents by sea to Halifax. Beeler's print was colored by hand, a method common in later nineteenth-century reproductions of Revolutionary scenes, which were often made for patriotic audiences.
