A ballplayer named Ewing, identified in the caption as a member of the Philadelphia Nationals, stands on the field here, though the record gives no date and the caption itself is unverified. Newspapers of the period sometimes used "Nationals" as a nickname for the city's National League club, the team later known as the Phillies. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its 5-by-7-inch glass negative reflects the standard equipment of that newsroom trade.
