Charlton Heston, the star named in this poster's record, anchors the image as the astronaut George Taylor in *Planet of the Apes*, the 1968 science-fiction film from 20th Century Fox. Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and adapted from Pierre Boulle's 1963 French novel, the film drew on the anxieties of its era about war, human nature and the limits of civilization. Its closing twist, which reveals a half-buried Statue of Liberty, became one of the most recognized endings in science fiction and spawned a long run of sequels, remakes and reboots.
