Few monuments in the Ottoman Levant carried as much weight as the tomb of Saladin, the sultan who recaptured Jerusalem in 1187 and died in Damascus in 1193. This photograph frames that tomb within a broad general view of the city. It was made by Félix Bonfils, whose studio in Beirut sold travel views of Syria, Palestine and Egypt to European and American buyers. The record dates it only to between 1870 and 1880, but the wide scene still shows how the old city and its monuments looked in that decade.
