This silkscreen poster advertises Paul Green's play *The House of Connelly* at the Mayan theater in California, produced in 1937 under the Federal theater Project. Green, a North Carolina playwright who won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1927, wrote the play about a Southern family whose fortunes decline after the Civil War. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, put actors, directors and designers back to work during the Depression and staged productions across the country. Its posters were made by WPA artists, and this one shows the bold flat color and hand-cut stencil style typical of that workshop.
