Few images of Mount Rushmore show the labor behind the monument as plainly as this one, with workers perched on the granite of George Washington's face. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the carving in 1927, and Washington was among the first faces to take shape, with crews using dynamite, drills and hand tools to remove the rock. The image was copyrighted by Rise Studio of Rapid City, South Dakota, and it records the physical work of a project that is now known mainly for its finished faces.
