Workmen are shown on the carved face of George Washington at Mount Rushmore, the South Dakota granite peak in the Black Hills where sculptor Gutzon Borglum began his monument in 1927. Taken around 1932 by the Rise Studio of Rapid City, the picture captures the early years of the project, when crews were still shaping the first of the four presidential heads. Borglum's team worked from ledges and scaffolding, using dynamite and drills to remove rock, and the image offers a rare sense of how small the men look against the mountain. Washington's face was the first to be completed, in 1930, before work moved on to the other figures.
