Ruins from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake make up the subject of this stereograph, issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm that mass-produced stereo views for home audiences. The earthquake struck early on April 18, 1906, and the fires that followed burned much of the city over the following days. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical photographs on the card merge into a single three-dimensional scene, letting viewers at home look over the wreckage from their parlors. Cards like this were a popular way for Americans to follow major news events at the time.
