A color poster by Saul Bass announces the 8th San Francisco International Film Festival, which ran October 14 through 27, 1964, at the Coronet theater. The festival began in 1957 and was among the first of its kind in the United States, building a reputation for showing foreign and independent films that rarely reached local screens. Bass, known for title sequences and posters for directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Otto Preminger, brought a bold, simplified graphic style to the event, which makes the poster a useful example of how film graphics were marketed in that period.
