Pencil and pastel give this 1918 view of Rock Creek Park a soft spring palette. The wooded valley runs through northwest Washington, D.C., and had been set aside as a public park in 1890. The drawing is credited to Robert Latou Dickinson, a New York physician better known for his medical work than for his art, and its subjects pair the park's bridges with the social life of visitors who came to walk and enjoy the outdoors. Drawings like this one show how city residents of the period used green space for leisure, a habit encouraged as urban parks came to be promoted for public health and recreation.
