Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Mechelen, is the figure at the center of this 1916 portrait, and the title's brief "pro" hints at the cause it was made to support. Mercier became one of the most recognized Belgian voices of the First World War after his 1914 pastoral letter, *Patriotism and Endurance*, condemned German occupation abuses and urged Belgians to hold firm. His outspoken defiance of the occupying authorities made him a symbol of national resistance, and images of him circulated widely in the Allied countries.
