Titled "Pro Patria: Le bon évêque de Meaux," this 1914 color lithograph honors the bishop of Meaux, a cathedral town about 40 kilometers east of Paris. A note in the lower left corner says it is the first in a planned wartime series called Pro Patria. Its subject headings point to the scenes that marked the town that year: departures of soldiers and the arrivals of casualties. Meaux sits on the Marne, and when the German advance reached the river in September 1914, the town became part of the First Battle of the Marne, which made it a symbol of the French resistance.
